• The Sacramento Bee reports that “with a Saturday deadline looming to negotiate a new labor contract, union leaders representing Northern California Safeway Inc. workers are poised to ask their members for a strike vote against the Pleasanton based grocery chain.
“Should contract talks fail, a vote Sunday to strike would mean 30,000 Safeway workers … could walk off the job during one of the grocery industry's busiest times of the year. It also raises the specter of picket lines in front of 267 Safeway stores from Fresno to the Oregon border and from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe.”
Safeway spokesman Brian Dowling said the company remains "hopeful" that an accord can be reached.
