Contract talks between Safeway and the United Food and Commercial Workers on a deal that would cover some 55,000 employees in Northern and Central California are “going well,” according to a union representative quoted by the San Jose Business Journal.

The union tells the paper that general agreement has been reached in the area of health benefits, ‘which is not a small thing,” and that discussions continue in the area of wages and pensions. “We are cautiously optimistic,” says Ron Lind, president of one of the UFCW locals with which Safeway is negotiating.
