• In the UK, the government Competition Commission has released an early draft of a working report saying that Tesco’s purchases of large plots of land – a so-called “land bank” that the company says it will use for future stores – is anti-competitive and demonstrates “a pattern of behaviour . . . consistent with the strategic holding of land to prevent entry (of competitors) into areas of strength.”
Tesco responded to the charge by saying that the commission doesn’t understand the planning process, and that it tries to build stores as fast as possible on the land that it owns because “as soon as you have got the land it is costing you money.”
