• Since first announcing its plans to install 400 generators in hurricane-prone areas last year, Publix said that it is adding more than 270 generators to its program in order to cover all Florida stores, where reasonable and practical. “We continue to work with and rely on the local municipalities and county government offices to expedite our efforts in the permitting process,” CEO Charlie Jenkins Jr. said. “Our goal is to have all generators installed by the end of 2008.”
• The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that Safeway “is expanding its voluntary recall of several fresh ground-beef products in Arizona. The move comes after United Food Group LLC updated its voluntary recall of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. United Food, the Vernon, Calif., distributor, has recalled all fresh and frozen ground-beef products - about 5.3 million pounds - produced at its plant from April 6 through April 20.
• The Chicago Tribune reports that Colgate-Palmolive is recalling a 5-ounce tubes of counterfeit toothpaste sold in discount stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland four states under a Colgate label because they may contain diethylene glycol, a poisonous chemical found in antifreeze.
• Jamba Juice, the smoothie retailer, plans to test a breakfast menu as part of its offering – including hot pocket sandwiches and chunk smoothies that would have to be eaten with a spoon and include ingredients such as oatmeal.
• Published reports say that Sony plans to start manufacturing and marketing a line of liquid-crystal display (LCD) televisions to big box retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target. The products will be value-priced, and designed so that they will not compete with more up-market versions sold at specialty electronics retailers.
