The New York Times reports that the Chinese government will overhaul “its food and drug safety regulations and would introduce nationwide inspections,” a move described by the paper as “the strongest signal yet that Beijing is moving to crack down on the sale of dangerous food and medicine and trying to calm fears that some of its exports pose health problems.”
The move comes after more than a month during which products ranging from pet food to toothpaste, containing ingredients sourced from China, have been pulled off the market because of food safety questions.
However, the Times also cautions that the overhaul is easier said than done, since its regulatory infrastructure “is weak and enforcement is difficult."
