McNeil Nutritionals, which manufactures the artificial sweetener Splenda, has settled a lawsuit brought against it by Merisant Co., which makes its rival Equal, accusing it of trying to confuse consumers about its makeup.

Splenda’s slogan has been “made from sugar so it tastes like sugar,” which Merisant argued was deceptive.

The settlement – the details of which have been kept confidential – came after a jury in the lawsuit reached a verdict in favor of Merisant but had not yet reached a conclusion regarding damages.

Merisant was seeking as much as $200 million in damages from McNeil.
