It was a remarkable moment yesterday when the Los Angeles Dodgers took the field, with each player wearing the number 42 – the number worn by Jackie Robinson when he broke baseball’s color barrier 60 years ago Sunday, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. With all the debate last week about race relations and the nature of civil discourse, it isn’t hard to draw a direct line from Jackie Robinson to Rutgers University’s women’s basketball team.

One additional note prompted by our watching the Dodgers game yesterday…
Look up the word “luminous” in the dictionary, and there should be a picture of Rachel Robinson, Jackie Robinson’s widow.
