CVS and Caremark Rx announced yesterday that they have completed the $26 billion acquisition by one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains of the nation’s largest pharmacy-benefits manager. The deal creates a major player in the health-care industry, with significant buying power in generic drugs and dominant positions in numbers of retail outlets and mail-order capability. The combined companies are expected to fill or manage as many as one billion prescriptions a year.
