• The Baltimore Sun reports that Mark Kaiser, the former marketing chief as Ahold’s US Foodservice division, is scheduled to be sentenced this Thursday after having been convicted for conspiracy and fraud in the accounting scandal that roiled the company.

The government wants him put away for 30 years. The defense says that he should get no more than 27 months.

• The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Leslie Rudd, who owns a Napa Valley winery and the New York gourmet grocer Dean & Deluca, has purchased the assets of Oakville Grocery,” the 126-year-old upscale grocer that “was on the verge of shutting down amid financial problems.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

• The Maryland State Legislature reportedly will consider a bill that would allow dairy farmers there to sell milk directly from the cow, as demand for raw milk – that has not been pasteurized – grows.

• Four past and present Gelson’s Markets executives were inducted into the California Grocers Association (CGA) Educational Foundation Hall of Achievement last week at a CGA awards dinner. The Gelson’s honorees included: Bob Stiles, President; Bernard Briskin, Chairman and CEO; Allan Scharn, retired President and Bill Roulette, retired Senior Vice President of Operations.

We get press releases about awards and such all the time, and hardly ever use them. But we made an exception this time because Bob Stiles was very nice to us early in our career covering this industry, and we’ve always appreciated it. And we try never to forget.
