business news in context, analysis with attitude

• The Wall Street Journal this morning reports that Wal-Mart is moving Carter Cast, CEO of its subsidiary, over to its US stores division to oversee business strategy and strategic planning.

Raul Vazquez, former chief marketing officer for Wal-Mart’s web subsidiary, now becomes CEO for the dot-com.

Both men report to Eduardo Castro-Wright, the head of U.S. stores who himself was recently reported to be changing jobs within the company – mistakenly, as it turned out.

Still, as the Journal notes, the new moves come as Wal-Mart grapples with less than inspiring same-store sales growth, and “after Wal-Mart in January shifted former Chief Marketing Officer John Fleming into a top merchandising role and announced the impending retirement of merchandising executive vice president Doug Degn. The Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer also shuffled several senior vice presidents in its merchandising operation and narrowed executive vice president Claire Watts's responsibilities to the apparel division.”

• Wal-Mart reportedly has opened 29 new in-store medical clinics , almost doubling the number of such facilities it operates to 57.
