business news in context, analysis with attitude

• The Syracuse Post Standard reports this morning that Penn Traffic president/CEO Robert Chapman has retired, and will be replaced by two former A&P executives, Gregory J. Young, who currently is Penn Traffic's chief marketing and distribution officer, and Robert Panasuk.

• Sheetz Inc., the Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain, said yesterday that Joe S. Sheetz will become the company’s new executive vice president of store development, succeeding his father, Joe M. Sheetz, who passed away last summer.

Joe S. Sheetz also will continue in his current role as executive vice president of finance.
KC's View:
The face, name and voice that the Sheetz family provides for its chain of stores cannot be underestimated. Just a couple of years ago, when there was a salmonella problem connected to tomatoes being used by some of its delis, family members stood up, talked to the media, explained the situation, took responsibility…and managed, in the process, to deal with the problem without any serious erosion of consumer trust and business.
