business news in context, analysis with attitude

Smart and Final announced that Andre Delolmo, senior vice president of store operations, is leaving the company to join Casino – which owns Smart & Final – in an unspecified position.

Delolmo will be succeeded by Timothy Snee, currently senior vice president of buying.

Norah Morley, Smart & Final’s senior vice president of marketing, will add Snee's buying responsibilities to her present duties.
KC's View:
In some ways, this may be like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Not that Smart & Final is sinking, exactly, but Casino reportedly plans to divest the chain sooner rather than later.

Which is sort of interesting, since it could make a lot of retail real estate available in the California market at a time when Tesco is coming to town and other players will be looking to shore up or establish their market positions.

The question is what companies might be interested in Smart & Final, and what kind of play they’d be interested in making. Wal-Mart? Supervalu?

Curiouser and curiouser, as Alice used to say.
