The National Retail Federation (NRF) says that Americans will spend $5 billion on Halloween this year, on the candy, decorations and costumes that go along with the holiday. NRF says that the expenditure will be 50 percent more than US consumers spent just a year ago.

Part of the increase comes from the fact that two-thirds of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween this year, compared to 50 percent last year.

NRF says that Halloween has become the second-highest spending holiday of the year, with only Christmas responsible for higher amounts of consumer spending.
