business news in context, analysis with attitude

• Thousands of employees who work at 20 warehouse facilities operated by Wal-Mart’s Asda Group in the UK have said that they will stage a five-day strike beginning on June 30, protesting the company’s wage policies and attitude toward collective bargaining. Only one-third of Asda’s warehouse workers are actually part of the union calling for the strike, so company management feels it can minimize any disruption to the stores.

• Wal-Mart reportedly will open 20 new stores in China this year, according to press reports there. The company opened one yesterday in the eastern Zhejiang province, bringing its current total to 60.
