• Albertsons stores in Northern California reportedly are running going-out-of-business sales in advance of their planned closures later this summer by new owner Cerberus. Checks are no longer being taken as payment, and newspaper advertising and in-store signs are promoting the liquidation sales.

• Lubbock, Texas-based United Supermarkets reportedly has acquired two supermarkets formerly owned by Brookshire Grocery Co., and will reopen them as Super Mercado stores. The move is designed to build on United’s strategy of growing its Hispanic business.
