business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Business Journal of Phoenix reports that the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) has filed against Bashas’ Supermarkets with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), claiming that the company violated the federal law that “requires management to bargain with employee representatives over changes to pay, benefits and working conditions, including increases in health insurance premiums.”

Mike Proulx, president/COO of Bashas’, fired back, saying that the union was out of line in criticizing the company’s changing of some health care premiums. Bashas’ in a non-union shop, and Proulx said he would welcome a vote on unionizing workers.

Bashas’ recently filed a suit against the UFCW, charging that the union was trying to impede its business through its organizing activities.
