business news in context, analysis with attitude

McDonald’s announced yesterday that when it started using new testing methods, it discovered that its French fries actually have a third more trans fats than previously believed.

Trans fats are believed to cause increased cholesterol and heart problems.

The company said that it is disclosing the information voluntarily, since fast food chains are not bound by new federal regulations requiring that packaged goods companies disclose such trans fat information.

The company has long promised that it would cut down on the trans fats in its French fries, but has had trouble delivering on a lower fat fry that is as tasty as its traditional product.
KC's View:
It is patently absurd that CPG companies have to disclose trans fat information but fast feeders don’t.
