Food Lion announced yesterday that it will remodel the 60 stores it operates in the Washington, DC, marketplace, at the same time bringing two of its other banners – Bloom and Bottom Dollar – to the area.
Bloom is a convenience-and-technology driven format that takes an innovative approach to design and merchandising, while Bottom Dollar is a value-driven format. There currently are five Bloom stores and three Bottom Dollar units, all in North Carolina.
According to a statement released by Food Lion, “The company is conducting a market analysis to determine which of the three banners - Food Lion, Bloom and Bottom Dollar - will best meet customer needs at specific store locations.”
"These planned store remodels and the introduction of Bloom and Bottom Dollar are indicative of Food Lion LLC's intense focus on serving the diverse range of customers in the Washington region," said Cathy Green, Food Lion COO. "This effort represents a major commitment by Food Lion to this region and our customers."
Food Lion also announced that it plans to open nine stores in the upstate region of South Carolina, a new market for the company. Six of the units will be Bloom stores, and three carry the Food Lion banner.

Delhaize continues to impress us by playing offense, not defense…and we are big fans of the Bloom concept.
Glad to see that the company continues to move in the right direction.
