The New York Times reports this morning that Trader Joe’s will open its first New York City store, on 14th Street near Union Square. Trader Joe’s will actually open two stores – a food store and, next door, a wine shop. (New York State does not allow wine to be sold in food stores.)
According to the Times, Union Square is becoming a mecca for food shoppers – in addition to Trader Joe’s, there are a new Whole Foods, Balducci’s, and Garden of Eden there. There’s also a Greenmarket open on the square four days a week.
