• Tesco reports that in the seven weeks ending January 7 – the prime holiday shopping season – company-wide same-store sales were up 5.7 percent, and management pronounced itself “delighted with the fantastic performance.”

That figure seems to be higher than the same-store sales increases reported by its rivals – Asda was up better than 2.8 percent, Sainsbury was up 5.2 percent, and William Morrison was up 2.8 percent.
