Forbes reports on the efforts of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s efforts to improve the collective health of the city’s population.

According to Forbes, Republican Mayor Bloomberg “backs regulations when they may potentially save vitality and lives,” banning smoking in the city’s bars and restaurants and launching “an educational drive versus trans-fats, which are suspected of upping the risk of heart disease--and unfortunately, upping the deliciousness of various baked and fried foods.”

The city’s Department of Health “is initiating a program to improve what's on the shelves of local bodegas in lower-income areas. The city plans another survey this spring to measure the results of the project,” Forbes writes.

Ironically, the magazine notes, only 53 percent of New Yorkers are said to be overweight – compared to the national average of 65 percent.
