After 107 years of operation, The Berghoff – a legendary restaurant and bar on West Adams Street – will close on February 28. While the location will be occupied by a family member who will run a catering business, the private label beer sold there will still be made and marketed by the Joseph Huber Brewery.

Ever since we started going to the FMI Show in Chicago some two decades ago, one of our favorite and regular stops was at The Berghoff for a quick Dortmunder-style beer and a hand-carved sandwich. Certainly it was always a somewhat anachronistic experience – almost as much so as going to McSorley’s in New York – but it always has been a nice touchstone.
Sure, its time may have come and gone. But it is just a little sad when such institutions vanish into memory.
