• Safeway said yesterday that it plans to spend about $1.6 billion during 2006 to build between 10 and 25 new stores and remodel about 280 units.
• Gartner Inc. projects that “worldwide RFID spending is expected to total $504 million in 2005, up 39 percent from 2004.” In addition, Gartner says that “RFID will begin to experience broader industry adoption with business value-focused implementations toward the end of 2006 when new license revenue totals $751 million. By 2010, Gartner forecasts worldwide RFID spending to surpass $3 billion.”
• The New York Times this morning reports that Quiznos, the nation’s second largest sandwich restaurant chain, is on the sale block. The company, currently family-controlled, had more than $1.3 billion in sales last year and annual earnings of about $135 million.
It is expected the company could fetch close to $2 billion.
