• Some 13,000 unionized employees at the Ohio supermarket chains Fishers Foods, Giant Eagle, F.W. Albrecht, Tops and Heinen's were scheduled to vote last night on whether to authorize a strike if a contract agreement cannot be reached with management. The union contract expired on September 11.


• The Chicago Tribune reports that Walgreens is being sued by three former employees and three black customers, all of whom say that white supervisors ordered the random harassment of black customers suspected of being criminals.


• The city of Chicago announced that it will hold a “Grocery Store Expo” in February 2006, hoping that it can persuade both major supermarket chains and independent stores to open units in underserved neighborhoods.
