The Buffalo News reports that Wal-Mart plans to increase the membership fees by five dollars for its Sam’s Club chain. Business memberships will be $35, and basic memberships will be $40.

The increase takes effect January 1, 2006.

Company executives tell the News that membership fees are the main contributor to Sam’s Club profitability, though they will not provide specific figures. These executives say that increasing Sam’s profitability is a major priority for Wal-Mart.

The News reports that Costco may also raise its fees sometime next year.
