business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Supervalu chairman/CEO Jeff Noddle says that while the wholesaler is selling off 20 of the area’s Shop ‘n Save stores, it plans to remain in the business of selling product to those stores.

"Remember, we're selling the stores," Noddle told analysts yesterday. "We're going to sell to the people who are most conducive to us continuing as the distribution partner for those stores."

There are a total of 75 Shop ‘n Save stores in the region, with the majority owned by independent retailers. Supervalu has said that the retail brand will be better served by having the whole fleet in independent hands, rather than split between retailers and the wholesaler.
