The San Jose Mercury News reports that Whole Foods plans to open six new stores in the San Francisco area over the next 24 months, a significant boost over its current fleet of 16 stores there. California already is Whole Foods’ biggest and most successful market, and the company clearly wants to make it more so.
Several of the new stores are slated to be built in areas of San Jose that the company currently feels is underserved by the food industry. The company also plans a new store (its third) in San Francisco, as well as moving to a new, larger location in Cupertino.

- We believe that the most impressive thing that Whole Foods has done is create an in-store environment that marries a belief in natural and organic foods with a food-driven culture that treasures good taste – not something that just a few years ago many people would have thought possible.
