The Wall Street Journal has a story saying that fava beans illustrate one of the debates that tend to rile people up in the food industry.

One the one hand, fava beans actually can make some people sick, even fatally. And therefore some people believe that the medical dangers ought to be highlighted on the product and in stores.

On the other hand, it is a miniscule group of people affected negatively by fava beans , and other people say that it is so small that warnings simply aren’t warranted.

Interestingly, it isn’t an allergy to fava beans that creates problems. It is a genetic condition that prevents some people from having the enzyme that allows them to process the naturally occurring toxins found in fava beans.
KC's View:
We thought that fava beans were only threatening to the health of census takers.
