business news in context, analysis with attitude

The New York Times reports this morning that the United Egg Producers has agreed to a change in labels for egg packaging from “Animal Care Certified” to “United Egg Producers Certified.”

The change was requested by an animal welfare group that was concerned that the old wording was misleading consumers into thinking that the “hens were receiving indisputably humane care,” which it said isn’t always the case.

While the egg producers disputes the claim that hens are mistreated, it agreed to the change because the dispute was hurting business.
