business news in context, analysis with attitude

In the UK, Tesco and Wal-Mart’s Asda Group – which are engaged in a years-long price war – have extended their battle to the petrol business, cutting gasoline prices in response to growing national concern about the rising costs of fuel.

Meanwhile, The Grocer, a British supermarket trade magazine, has released a study saying that as the UK price wars continue, Wal-Mart’s Asda stores are 1.4 percent cheaper than Tesco for a standard 100-item shopping basket.

Analysts, however, believe that Tesco will respond to this study by lowering prices….which will lead Asda to lower prices….which will probably force Asda to lower its prices yet again.

And the beat goes on.
