Safeway is announcing that it has begun offering its online grocery ordering and delivery service in the Washington, DC, area.
The move expands Safeway’s e-grocery offerings beyond the west coast and Philadelphia markets that it currently serves, and brings it directly into competition with the Peapod online service offered by Ahold’s Giant of Landover.
"We've had our eye on the Washington market for probably about two years," Mitchell Rhodes, president of Safeway.com, told the Washington Post. "We wanted to come sooner, but because we had a competitor, we wanted to bring our best effort forward. . . . We wanted to make sure we had something really good versus something that was just okay."

- Not to say that Safeway can’t make inroads or expand the online grocery business in DC, but we think that competing with Peapod is no easy matter. We’ve never ordered from Safeway.com because it doesn’t offer the service in our market…but we are big fans of Peapod.
