In upstate New York, the Times Herald-Record has an interesting story about how the possibility that something called a bog turtle is preventing the building of a new Hannaford Bros. store there (along with an adjacent car dealership and bank).
Nobody actually has seen a bog turtle. But an environmental engineer raised the possibility that the endangered species might live there to the town Planning Board, which has resulted in a hold on development plans.
What’s interesting is that there are those who are alleging that the environmental engineer endeavoring to protect the bog turtle might have another motivation – he was hired by attorneys who work for ShopRite, which currently has the only grocery store in Warwick – though that would change if Hannaford were able to build a store there.
