- Published reports say that Delhaize-owned Food Lion has acquired a half-dozen Winn-Dixie stores, one in Georgia and five in North Carolina. The company already has stores in each of the markets where it has acquired units from the bankrupt Winn-Dixie.
- As expected, the teamsters and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) voted yesterday to sever their ties to the AFL-CIO, which cuts the labor federation’s membership by 25 percent and splinters the organized labor movement. Furthermore, Unite Here, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and the Laborers' International Union of North America reportedly are considering leaving the AFL-CIO.
- Publix Super Markets reportedly has settled a decade-old lawsuit that charged it with violating provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The company will pay $160,000 in attorneys’ fees and as much as $100,000 because of charges that its stores did not comply with legal requirements that they be accessible to people with wheelchairs and other handicaps.
