  • Albertsons reported that its first quarter net income almost tripled to $100 million from $36 million a year ago. Total sales grew 16 percent to $9.99 billion from $8.61 billion last year, which the company attributed to the acquisition of Shaw's, progress in recovering from the Southern California strike/lockout, new store expansion and several new merchandising programs.

    Same-store sales increased 1.8 percent for the quarter.


  • Rite Aid posted May sales that declined 0.6 percent to $1.62 billion, compared with $1.63 billion for the same period last year. Same-store sales for the period were down 0.4 percent.

    Total drug store sales for the first quarter also declined 0.6 percent to $4.20 billion from $4.23 billion in last year's first quarter. First quarter same-store sales were down 0.3 percent.
