In upstate New York, the Post Standard reports that there are several supermarket chains interested in acquiring as many as 20 supermarkets owned by Ahold’s Tops division in central New York.
The only problem with the speculation is that Price Chopper and Penn Traffic - the two chains supposedly interested in the Tops stores – aren’t confirming that they are buying anything, and Tops isn’t saying whether it is selling anything.
The only hint: the Post Standard writes that “when asked about the possibility of buying some Tops stores a comfortable fit for Price Chopper's trade area Price Chopper executive Mona Golub said only this: "We are not at liberty to make any comments as far as the Tops stores go. We've signed a confidentiality clause at this point.”
