business news in context, analysis with attitude

Crain’s Chicago Business reports that despite all the threats of obesity lawsuits, there actually is just one such suit currently on the books – three-year-litigation pending against McDonald’s charging that a pair of teenagers suffering from obesity and other health problems could trace their suffering directly back to McDonald’s food.

While a rash of suits has not broken out, Crain’s notes that more than 20 states are considering laws that would restrict such suits, and there is even hope that some sort of national legislation might be passed. And, Crain’s writes, the anti-obesity efforts have thus far not attracted the kind of legal attention and support that took place in the anti-tobacco era.
KC's View:
We think it is good that the legal system hasn’t been deluged with obesity-related suits. But we also think that the threat of such suits has raised the general consciousness about obesity…and that’s a good thing.
