  • Costco Wholesale Corp. reported that its March sales grew 10 percent to $4.87 billion from $4.41 billion during the same period last year. Same-store sales at US stores increased 6 percent during the month, while international same-store sales were up 13 percent.


  • Target Corp. reported that its March sales increased 14.3 percent to $4.4 billion from $3.9 billion during the same period a year ago. Same-store sales for the period were up 8.2 percent. Year-to-date sales were reported to be $7.8 billion, up 15.1 percent…with year-to-date same-store sales up 8.5 percent.


  • BJ's Wholesale Club reported that its March sales increased by 7.0 percent to $663.9 million from $620.4 million in March 2004. Same-store sales were up three percent, while same-store food sales were up seven percent for the month.


  • Drugstore chain CVS Corp. reported March sales of $3.55 billion, up 34 percent from a year earlier, an increase partially attributed to last-year's acquisition of 1,268 Eckerd drugstores. Same-store sales were up 7.5 percent.


  • Dollar General Corporation reported March sales of $756.2 million, compared with $672.9 million last year, an increase of 12.4 percent. Same-store sales were up 4.2 percent.


  • Family Dollar Stores reported that its March sales rose 10.5 percent to $552.7 million from $500.3 million during the same period a year ago. Same-store sales were up 2.4 percent.


  • 7-Eleven Inc. reported that its total merchandise sales for February increased 3.1 percent over the year-ago month to $587.4 million, while gasoline sales for the month rang in at $332.5 million, a 12.5 percent jump compared to $295.6 million last February. Same-store merchandise sales were up 5.7 percent over the year-ago period.


  • Longs Drug Stores Corporation reported March preliminary total sales were $446.3 million compared with $444.0 million for the comparable period a year ago, an increase of 0.5 percent. Same-store sales were up 0.4 percent.

KC's View:
Just as a matter of comparison, Wal-Mart’s same-store sales for March were up 4.2 percent…outpaced by both Costco and Target.
