Chiquita Brands International announced today that it will spend $855 million to acquire Fresh Express, a maker of bagged salads, from Performance Food Group Co. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter.

The company says that Fresh Express has about 40 percent of the fresh-cut salad market, as well as having a presence in the precut fruit business.

Chiquita reportedly plans to rebrand Fresh Express's precut fruits with its own name, but will leave the Fresh Express name on the bagged salads.
