business news in context, analysis with attitude

The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) has published a study suggesting that Americans are in denial about their general level of fitness.

Seventy percent of poll respondents said they were completely or somewhat satisfied with their physical health; 66 percent said the same about their physical appearance; and 52 percent said they were satisfied with the amount of exercise they get.

Of course, federal statistics say the opposite – that two-thirds of Americans are not physically active on a regular basis, that 25 percent get practically no exercise at all, and that two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese.

At the same time, the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) has published a study saying that only 22 percent of consumers are “somewhat familiar” with the recently released 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and only nine percent of the public is “very familiar” with them.

According to PMA, 10 percent of consumers said they are likely to change their eating habits as a result of the new guidelines, regardless of their current level of awareness. Among the nine percent of consumers who are already very familiar with the new guidelines, 40 percent said they are very likely to change their eating habits, while 22 percent said they are somewhat likely to change their eating habits.

Go figure. We live in a delusional culture.

We’d comment more but we need to go jogging. And then maybe eat some fresh fruit.
