The Wichita Eagle reports that the National Cattlemen's Beef Association has voted to keep the US border closed to imports of Canadian cattle over 30 months old.

However, Mike Johanns, the new secretary of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), told the group in a speech over the weekend that the border will reopen to such shipments on March 7.

Johanns did say that USDA would take into account certain concerns expressed by the cattlemen’s association, such as making sure that Canadian efforts to prevent the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as mad cow disease, are working.
