business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Palm Beach Post reports on the various iterations of supermarket competition taking place in its area of the country.

“On one side are the traditional neighborhood stores: Publix, Winn-Dixie and Albertsons,” the paper writes. “On the other are the Wal-Mart Supercenters, Costcos and drug chains.” But there are plenty of other weapons being employed in the food fight: there is a Toys R Us aisle at Albertsons, Publix has a sommelier in the wine department, and at Winn-Dixie, customers can pick out fresh seafood and have it cooked and seasoned to taste while they are shopping. Specialty foods and coffees are de rigueur, and grocers are looking for every and any angle to attract shopper dollars.
