Over the past couple of weeks, there has been some discussion here on MNB about the decision by some retailers to ban Salvation Army volunteers from soliciting charitable donations outside their stores during the holiday season. These companies seemed to be concerned about the volunteers being over-aggressive in their efforts; Wal-Mart, for one, went in the opposite direction, allowing store managers to permit the Salvation Army to solicit and even pledging to match donations up to $1 million.
Another chain that apparently decided to allow the Salvation Army to solicit was Safeway. And proving that no good deed goes unpunished, a Denver employee of the Army reportedly got drunk and then got into a fight with a Safeway staffer. The Army employee was arrested, at which point police discovered that there were 11 outstanding warrants for his arrest, nine of which were for public consumption of alcohol.
