business news in context, analysis with attitude

Walgreen Co. announced this week that it will no longer accept the American Express card, effective January 14.

The drug chain cited transaction fees that are higher than those charged by Visa and MasterCard as the reason for the decision. Walgreen also said that transactions using Amex actually account for a “small fraction” of total sales, so the company does not expect much blowback from consumers.

Ironically, the decision comes as American Express launches a new marketing campaign around the slogan ‘My Life, My Card,” featuring surfer Laird Hamilton, comedian/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, and actor Robert DeNiro. The company says that it hopes Walgreen will reconsider.
