Even before it has opened its fourth store on Long Island – an event scheduled for mid-2005 – Connecticut-based retailer Stew Leonard’s has had its initial application approved as it looks to build a fifth store in Orange, Ct.

The approval, which covers protection of local wetlands, contains more than a dozen conditions that must be met for actual building to take place. It remains for the town’s Planning and Zoning authorities to approve a final plan that would allow the company to build a store there on land that it has owned for some time.

Stew Leonard’s currently operates three stores that each carries in the range of one thousand items – dominated by fresh and private label product – that generate more than $300 million a year in revenue each year for the company.
