USA Today reports this morning that “Super Size Me,” the documentary in which writer/producer Morgan Spurlock ate only McDonald’s fast food for a month and tracked its impact on his physical, mental and emotional health, is among 12 films competing for a “best documentary” nomination at the Academy Awards.

The nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, with the Academy Awards being presented on Sunday, February 27, 2005.

The paper notes that “Super Size Me” is one of the highest-grossing documentaries ever with $11.5 million at the domestic box office. (Dwarfed of course, by the $120 million earned by Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which isn’t up for the best documentary nomination because Moore wanted it to be considered in the “best film” category.

We mention this because it means that the issue of diet and nutrition will be getting an extra helping of attention early in 2005. Be prepared.
