Tennessee-based E.W. James & Sons Supermarkets has purchased 10 Winn-Dixie stores in Kentucky, and will be converted to the new company’s banner by the end of the year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We believe customers are far more inconvenienced by a closed store than one that remains open while going through a carefully planned remodel," David James, CEO of E.W. James & Sons, said in a written statement.
The move is a significant growth move by the privately held E.W. James, which has been operating 25 units in Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi; a half-dozen of these stores are Save-A-Lot stores.
Winn-Dixie, which has been refocusing on its core units, has been working to sell some 156 of its supermarkets in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Virginia.
