business news in context, analysis with attitude

Costco Wholesale has signed a deal with California Closets, the nation’s largest space planning company, that will have the storage space designer showcasing its systems in select club stores around the country. The move follows a successful 12-month test.

“Given that 94 percent of Costco members are homeowners with an above average median household income, we believe this sophisticated and affluent market is perfectly aligned with the ideal California Closets client,” Anthony Vidergauz, president and CEO of California Closets, said in a statement. “With the volume of foot traffic in Costco warehouses, this is an incredible opportunity for us to introduce our core philosophy of ‘Simplifying home and life’ to this discerning audience and generate exciting business through Costco.”
KC's View:
It was just a couple of months ago that Costco got into the business of storing dead bodies by testing the sale of caskets from some of its clubs. So maybe there’s a trend here…

Actually, we noticed the California Closets display when we were at our local Costco on Sunday, and it seemed to us then to be a pretty smart idea. It is interesting to watch Costco test the notion of become an aggregator of so many products and services, becoming a kind of physical portal through which consumers can hook into the things they need and want.

The only opportunity that we think they may be missing is not having a link to California Closets on the Costco site. But aside from that, this seems like a smart deal from beginning to end.
