- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. this morning posted May sales that were $21.43 billion, up 12.8 percent from a year earlier. Total US same-store sales were up 5.9 percent, while same-store sales rose 4.7 percent in the Wal-Mart stores division and 11.8 percent at Sam's Club warehouse stores.
- Albertsons Inc. reported that its first quarter net income fell to $36 million, compared to $172 million during the same period a year ago. The decrease was blamed on costs associated with a four-month labor strike/lockout in Southern California.
Sales for the quarter totaled $8.69 billion versus last year’s $8.9 billion. Same-store sales slipped 3.7 percent.
- Costco Wholesale Corporation reported net sales of $3.80 billion for the four weeks ended May 30, 2004, an increase of 19 percent from $3.20 billion in the same four-week period of the prior fiscal year.
For the first 39 weeks of its 2004 fiscal year ended May 30, 2004, the Company reported net sales of $35.15 billion, an increase of 15 percent from $30.67 billion during the similar 39-week period of the prior fiscal year.
- Walgreens reported that May sales rose 12.8 percent to $3.18 billion, with same-store sales increasing 8.5 percent.
Pharmacy same-store sales increased 10.5 percent, while front-end same-store sales climbed up 5.3 percent.
