Published reports out of Europe suggest that the French government is considering the reclassification of wine as a food, rather than as an alcoholic drink.

The goal of such a move, which would allow broader advertising of wine, would be to build consumption at a time when the French are drinking less wine than ever.

Four decades ago, the French drank 134 bottles of wine a year, compared with just 77 today.

This is a question that was answered decades ago by – go figure – an American.

It was Ernest Hemingway who once said, “In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary.”
