The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has filed a request with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking that partially hydrogenated vegetable oil – more popularly known as trans fats – be banned from use in foods.
"Unlike fats that occur in nature, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is totally artificial and absolutely unnecessary in the food supply," said Michael Jacobson, CSPI executive director.
CSPI also is embarking on a public relations campaign designed to pressure food manufacturers into reformulating their products sans trans fats.
Federal legislations calls for trans fats to be labeled on CPG products by 2006, and major manufacturers already have begun the process of eliminating them from snack foods.
